In mathematics, we have come across different types of diagrams (示意图), charts, shapes and puzzles. Tangrams (七巧板) are old puzzles. They have been found in old Chinese books. During the 1800s, tangrams were very popular in both Europe and the United States. And the puzzles are still enjoyed today.
the tangram square
The tangram is an operation puzzle consisting of seven flat polygons (多边形). Five pieces are right triangles. There are two large triangles, one medium triangle, and two small triangles.
There are two other pieces, a square and a parallelogram. You move the pieces around to make different shapes. For example, the pieces can make a large square.
A book of tangram puzzles shows black outlines of shapes. The challenge is to use all the pieces to make one of the black outlines. There are many geometric (几何的) shapes to make. Some of the puzzles look like animals. You can also make letters and many other things. Some classic rules that are used to make tangrams include:
* All tangram pieces must be used.
* All the pieces must lay flat.
* All these pieces must touch and none may overlap (重叠) while forming a shape.
You can buy tangram puzzle pieces made of plastic or wood. But it is easy to make your own set. Draw the pieces on graph paper. Follow the heavy lines in the diagram. Cut the shapes apart. You will have your own set of tangram pieces. As your first puzzle, put the square back together. Next, try making one large triangle. Remember to use all seven pieces. Then try a rectangle (长方形). There are many puzzle books using these shapes.
What are tangrams used for? Tangrams can educate students about spatial (空间的) relationships. They may help students learn geometric terms and develop problem - solving skills. They might even allow students to perform better on tests of basic geometric shapes.
Perhaps you'll find you like working with tangrams. Warning: Playing with the pieces can be addictive (上瘾的)!
