The history of April Fool's Day or All Fools' Day, it is believed that, began around 1582 in France.
The French people used to celebrate the New Year's Day from March 25th to April 1st. But things changed in 1582. The French King began to ask his people to celebrate it on January 1st. However, some people refused to change the date. They still celebrated from March 25th to April 1st. These people were called "fools". Then people started to give invitations to these "fools" and of course these invitations were just jokes. Many people were fooled especially on April 1st.
At the same time, other practical jokes were played as well. A common one was to hang a paper fish on the back of someone as a joke. He or she who had a paper fish on the back was called "April Fish", because a young fish in April is easily caught.
Soon similar funny things happened across France. Year by year, joke-playing continued on the first day of April. This tradition was finally known by Britain and Scotland in the 18th century and was introduced to America and other countries, too. Because of this, April Fool's Day has become the holiday in its own way.
