Qingtuan is a type of green rice dumpling made from mugwort(艾草). Chinese people started to eat it more than 1,000 years ago.
In the southern part of China, eating qingtuan at the beginning of spring is a kind of tradition. The seasonal(季节性的) snack, which stands for the cultural symbol of many areas in China, is becoming a popular snack in the country. The online sales platform(平台) got record-high daily sales of 13,000 pieces of qingtuan when it came out in early March.
The charm of qingtuan lies in its green appearance and rich fillings(馅). Similar to mooncakes, the taste of qingtuan has broken traditional limits and is becoming a creative snack. Besides the traditional sesame filling, people can also eat qingtuan with strawberry, sweet potato, rose and beef fillings. The new tastes are created to meet the needs of young customers with different tastes. The difference of the tastes also shows that it's getting more and more popular across the whole country.
There are different ways for people to sell qingtuan. Apart from restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores, qingtuan makers are also exploring online methods to reach more young customers.
Qingtuan has strong regional(区域的) characteristics, so many people outside the Yangtze River Delta area are not familiar with it. Some customers there buy this snack out of curiosity(出于好奇) but they fall in love with its taste after trying it.
In a word, even though there is warm weather and green leaves in spring, the season wouldn't be perfect without a taste of qingtuan.
