Located in South America, the Amazon rainforest is a magical and important place for our planet. It covers an area of about 6 million square kilometres, which is almost the size of some large countries. The famous Amazon River runs through the whole rainforest, bringing water and life to thousands of plants and animals. As the world’s largest rainforest, it plays a key role in keeping our planet healthy. However, this amazing rainforest is getting “sick” day by day because of climate change and human activities. The trees may die, and the rainforest could turn into a hot and dry area in the future.
Why is the Amazon rainforest “sick”? The Amazon rainforest is one of the wettest places. Droughts(干旱) hit the rainforest and harm it a lot. They are caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire.
On top of this, people cut down a lot of trees for wood to make money. They clear trees to find something useful. They burn the forest to make farmland. All these have made the rainforest disappear.
What will happen if we lose it? The Amazon rainforest is the lung(肺) of our planet. The plants there take carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) out of the air and make oxygen(氧气). If the Amazon rainforest “dies”, there will be more CO₂ and our planet will become even hotter. The Amazon rainforest is also home to over 3 million species(物种) of animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would be very likely to disappear.
()1. Why is the Amazon rainforest so important?
A. It helps keep our planet healthy.
B. It offers a large area for people to live.
C. It provides wood for people to make money.
()2. What causes droughts in the Amazon rainforest?
A. Human activities.
B. Climate change.
C. Fire in the rainforest.
()3. What can we infer about the Amazon rainforest?
A. It can live well with so many species.
B. Protecting it is important for animals and plants.
C. Its “sickness” is mainly caused by natural reasons.
()4. How does the writer organize the passage?
A. Show a problem → Analyze the problem → Tell the influence
B. Introduce a place → Describe its beauty → Ask people to protect it
C. List facts → Give examples → Draw a conclusion

答案
1. A 2. B 3. B 4. A
解析
As the world’s largest rainforest, it plays a key role in keeping our planet healthy."
2. 第2题:根据原文第二段"Droughts(干旱) hit the rainforest and harm it a lot. They are caused by climate change."
