Smartphones have played an essential role in our daily lives. However, using phones too much can lead to health problems, particularly among children. Looking at the phone screen for a long time can be bad for children's eyesight, cervical vertebrae(颈椎)and even the brain. According to a government report, China has 193 million Internet users under the age of 18, nearly 90% of whom have their own mobile phones.
Many countries have taken steps to limit students' phone use at school. For example, France passed a law banning(禁止) the use of mobile phones on school grounds for children under the age of 15. The United States, Italy and Japan also have laws stopping students from bringing phones into classrooms.
To keep students focused in class, the Ministry of Education in China released(发布) a notice that restricts(限制) primary and middle school students from bringing mobile phones to school. Those who require their phones for special reasons must get approval(批准) from their parents and teachers, and must hand their phones over during class time.
Both educators and families support the new rules. An English teacher from Beijing noticed that many students lost themselves in their phones. She said, "Most students are short of self-control. Spending too much time on the phones prevents them from learning." A parent from Shanghai said, "The rules are good for children and limiting phone use is the right way to put their focus back on studies."
But some students disagree. A student said, "It is unwise to stop all the students taking their phones to school." He thinks adults can't simply cut them off from the Internet in the digital era and that it is more important for them to control themselves.
