Mrs Li is over seventy years old. She has lived in Beijing all her life. She is being interviewed about life today and in the past.
What was your life like in the past?
My family lived in a small house. There were no electric lights, only candles(蜡烛). My father was a postman, and he often worked for long hours. My mum was a farm girl before she met my father. She didn't go out to work. There were five children in my family.
I still remember the family meals. The food was simple. We could only eat meat once or twice a year. I didn't go to school because my parents couldn't afford(付得起) it.
How has your life changed?
Transport and travel are easier today. When I was young, I went here and there on foot or sometimes by bike. Now I can take the bus everywhere, and there's also the underground for people to take. And quite a few people can take a plane to anywhere in the world. The only thing I don't like, though, is that there's so much traffic.
Of course, we didn't have televisions when I was a child. I really enjoy watching TV today in my free time. There are so many good programmes. But some of the shows are too noisy for me, so I don't like them.
Generally speaking, I think life is much better today. We eat better and we live longer.
