Qingming Festival

As one of the four great traditional Chinese festivals, Qingming Festival,
also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day or Pure Brightness Festival, is a festival
to sweep tombs(坟墓) and pay respect(尊敬) to the ancestors(祖先).
Legend(传说) has it that the festival started from the Cold Food Festival
or Hanshi Festival. During Hanshi Festival, fire was not allowed(被禁止).
People could only eat cold food. So it was not healthy for them. In the Southern
Song Dynasty, Qingming Festival replaced(替代) the Cold Food Festival
completely.
Sweeping tombs and remembering the ancestors are two important
customs during Qingming Festival. On that day, people go to the tombs, set
out offerings(祭品), and kowtow(叩头) to show respect to their ancestors.

Terms(节气) in Chinese calendar, falling
on one day between the fourth and sixth
of April every year. It gets warmer and it
is a good time to sow(播种) plants in
spring. Also, Chinese people like going
out to enjoy spring sunshine and beautiful
scenery(风景).
