The first winds of winter blew. Birds were flying south to warmer places. But a strong wind hit a little thrush and hurt her wing. She fell to the ground.
“Excuse me!” she said to a birch tree. “I'm cold and hungry. Can you help me?” “Go away!” the birch tree shouted. The thrush walked through the deep snow. She said to a great oak tree, “Do you have any food for a poor thrush?” “Oh no!” said the oak. “If I give you food, next spring there will be many thrushes eating my food.”
Then the thrush walked to a willow. “Could you please give me some food or a shelter?” “I would like to, but if I do, you won't learn about self-reliance,” said the willow.
Just then, the thrush heard a shy voice. “Come over here, little bird! You can help yourself to my fruit!” That was the juniper. Then the spruce said, “Come and take shelter on my branches!” The thrush felt safe and warm.
The Frost King who ruled the forest in winter came and saw everything. He said, “We are all part of one big ecosystem. Everyone in the forest must help each other.” Then he spoke to the birch tree, the oak tree and the willow, “You three did not help the little bird. As a lesson, all of you will lose leaves every winter!”
The Frost King turned to the juniper and the spruce. “You were both nice to the little thrush. So, your leaves will stay green all year round!”
