The Grain in Ear—A Busy Time of Year
The Grain in Ear, or Mangzhong, is the 9th of the 24 Solar Terms. In Chinese, its name sounds like "busy planting". This is because it is a very busy time for farmers. When this solar term comes, the weather gets warmer and wetter. There is also more rain. This kind of weather can make people feel tired. They may not feel very hungry. Here are some fun traditions of this term.
Praying* for a Good Harvest
In parts of Anhui Province, people have a festival called "An Miao". They make colourful bread from flour and vegetable juice. They use this bread in a special ceremony* to ask for a good harvest and for everyone's safety.

Saying Goodbye to Flowers
During this time, the sun gets stronger, and many spring flowers start to die. Long ago, people believed this was because the "flower goddess* " was leaving. They held ceremonies to thank her and ask her to come back next year.
Making Plum* Wine
In southern China, green plums are ready to eat in May and June. But these plums are too sour to eat fresh. So people boil them or use them to make a special wine called plum wine. This wine tastes both fruity and sweet.
