The Chinese dance culture has a long history. In Chinese culture, dance is a way to show not only personal feelings but also the character of the nation. Traditional Chinese dance could date back to ancient court dance or folk dance from thousands of years ago.

From the Zhou Dynasty, through several dynasties to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, there was an agency in the palace which controlled music and dance. And musicians and dancers were trained there.
The Tang Dynasty was a very important period for traditional Chinese dance. However, the wars during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period changed the social order so much that many famous dances were lost.
Before 1919, traditional Chinese dance was mostly passed down among common people. After 1919, some artists believed that they should record Chinese dance—that was the beginning of the formal teaching of Chinese dance. To develop Chinese dance, the artists learned from the dance of folk operas, skills in ballet training and Chinese martial arts, creating a special system of Chinese dance.
Since Chinese dance was developed through a number of dynasties and social environments, it has been able to describe different nationalities, social classes, time periods, and personalities. Chinese dance has a strong ability to develop and grow. It has become a mainstream artistic performance form in recent years on the world stage.
