Last summer,I joined a volunteer program and spent seven days at a wildlife rescue centre in
Australia. It was hard work,but it was one of the most wonderful and meaningful weeks of my life.
Our main job was to care for sick and injured animals. Every morning,our first task was to
prepare food. I was taught how to carefully cut up fresh eucalyptus leaves for the koalas
and wash special vegetables for the kangaroos. We always had to be very quiet and move slowly
so we didn't scare the nervous animals. In the afternoons,we cleaned the animal enclosures. We removed old leaves,refilled water bowls,and made sure every animal had a clean and
comfortable home.
The most exciting part was helping to feed the baby kangaroos,called joeys. They
lived in a special warm room. The joeys were very cute and would drink special milk from
bottles. Some joeys were too small to stay warm by themselves,so we wrapped them in soft
cloths. They needed our help to survive because their mothers got injured in accidents.
At the end of the week,I felt sad to say goodbye but proud of what I had done. This
experience taught me the importance of being kind to all living things. It made me believe that
even our small actions can make a big difference in protecting wildlife.
