The Ailao Mountains sit in the heart of Yunnan. It's very easy to get lost there. Thick forests cover about 85 percent of the mountains. They keep out sunlight and phone signals. The fog makes it hard to see the road. And some magnetic(有磁性的) rocks in the mountains can even make your compass(指南针) stop working.

The weather there can change suddenly with rain and snow. It's hard for people to stay warm and dry. The mountains are also home to wild animals. All of them are hungry and ready for a "free meal". So the smartest choice is to enjoy its beauty from a safe distance.
However, the Ailao Mountains were not always a "no man's land". More than 2,000 years ago, a small kingdom was in the mountains. The people there rode elephants and used bronze weapons(青铜武器). They were good at making cloth.
There is an old road in the Ailao Mountains. In the past, Chinese businessmen traded in tea along it on horseback to Southeast Asia(东南亚). So people called it the Tea Horse Road.
