You may feel that Maths is difficult and boring. Is it possible that you've been looking at Maths in the wrong way? Li Xing, a Maths professor, thinks Maths can be beautiful and fun. I completely agree with him.
Numbers are beautiful
There is Maths hidden in beautiful human bodies. Measure(测量) the length from your head to your belly button(肚脐) and from your belly button to your feet. The ratio(比例) of these two numbers is always around 0.618. This is called the "golden ratio". You can see it in many places, like in nature, in music, and in paintings.
In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. Li Bai wrote "I've sailed a thousand li through Three Gorges in a day" and "My skiff(轻舟) has left ten thousand mountains far away"—all these numbers show how fast Li Bai travelled and how happy he felt.
Curves(曲线) are beautiful
"Sine curves" are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the waves slowly moving. A "tangent curve" is like a waterfall—just as Li Bai wrote, "Its torrent dashes(猛冲) down three thousand feet from high".
Formulas(公式) are beautiful
There are some amazing formulas. In a right-angled triangle(直角三角形), the square of the longest side is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. How amazing! Just as Chinese-American mathematician Shiing-Shen Chern said, "Maths is fun!"
1. If the ratio of a thing is around 0.618,
D
.
A. it has a golden colour
B. it only happens in human bodies
C. it looks like a human body
D. it might bring people a sense of beauty
2. Why does the writer mention Li Bai and his poems in the passage?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To support his opinion.
C. To share the beauty of Li Bai's poems.
D. To offer advice on learning Maths.
What does a tangent curve look like?

4. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why Maths is beautiful and fun.
B. Why Maths is difficult and boring.
C. How we can learn Maths in a right way.
D. How Maths helps us live a better life.
1. What are two examples of numbers showing beauty?
The golden ratio and poems.

2. How can sine curves make people feel?
Like watching sea waves.

3. Who said Maths is fun in the passage?
Shiing-Shen Chern.

答案

任务一
根据“There is Maths hidden in beautiful human bodies ... The ratio of these two numbers is always around 0.618 ... in nature, in music, and in paintings.”
根据“In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. Li Bai wrote ... all these numbers show how fast Li Bai travelled and how happy he felt.”
根据文中小标题和“Just as Chinese-American mathematician Shiing-Shen Chern said, 'Maths is fun!'”
1. The golden ratio and poems. 2. Like watching sea waves.
3. Shiing-Shen Chern.

文中提到正切曲线像瀑布,对应图像C(A为正弦曲线,B为余弦曲线,D为抛物线),故选C;4. The golden ratio and poems;2. 文中提到说“Maths is fun”的是Shiing-Shen Chern。
任务一:1.D 2.B 3.C 4.A;任务二:1.The golden ratio and poems. 2.Like watching sea waves. 3.Shiing-Shen Chern.
