Transformers(变形金刚) turned 40 this year, and Chinese fans have been celebrating in a big way. From Dec. 6 to 9, Shanghai hosted a transformers fan event called Cybertron Con. On Dec. 14, the Simple Neoclassical Orchestra(简单新古典乐团) played music from the cartoons and movies in Guangzhou.
I went to both events and was excited to see so many transformers fans in China. Kids showed off their transformers toys while teens and young people dressed up as their favourite robots. Even older fans also joined in the fun too.
At Cybertron Con, a great exhibit showed the history of transformers toys, comics, cartoons and movies.
There was even a huge Optimus Prime truck(擎天柱卡车) there! Transformers brands from China showed off their coolest products.
The concert was very fun. It celebrated music from the long history of transformers—from the 1984 cartoon to this year's movie Transformers One. An orchestra(管弦乐队) played the classic 1984 theme with the show playing in the background. Hearing the music, I felt like a kid again. But the song The Touch from the 1986 movie made me a little sad. It made me think of when Optimus Prime died just after this song in the classic movie.
There was a special guest, 102-year-old Lin Liang. Lin, an award-winning industrialist(实业家), saw how popular transformers could be in China and worked with its company Hasbro to bring the brand to the country. That's why he is called "the father of China's transformers". Meeting the man who brought something I'd loved from childhood to my new home was special. It shows how fandom can bring people together in celebration. As Optimus Prime says in the latest movie, "Till all are one!"
