Some animals can easily find their way home after a long trip. How do they make it? Scientists say that they are born with some unusual abilities for directions(方向).
A kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to stop themselves getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert(沙漠), so they have nothing to guide(指引) them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometres through the dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a drop(水滴) of water of their own home in a large sea area. Some seabirds have the same ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field(磁场), while we can't. This magnetic field guides some kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists still have no good answers now.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have trouble with some changes because of people's activities. For example, many birds depend(依靠) on stars for directions, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are on all night. To work out this problem, we can just turn off some lights at night. One small thing you do may mean a lot to animals. Let's do something for those animals.
