Long long ago, there lived an old man called Yu Gong, which means “Foolish Old Man”. His house faced two huge mountains, Taihang and Wangwu. They blocked his way, making every trip very long and difficult.
One day, Yu Gong called his family together. He said, “Let us work to move these mountains. We will dig them up and carry the earth and stones to the faraway sea. ” His family all agreed to help.
A clever old man saw them working and laughed. He said to Yu Gong, “You are too old and weak. How can you possibly move such big mountains? It is an impossible job. ” But Yu Gong answered strongly, “You are wrong. After I die, my sons will continue. Then their sons, and their sons' sons. The mountains are high, but they can't grow taller. With every bit we dig, they get smaller. Why can't we move them in the end? ”
Moved by Yu Gong's strong will, the gods in heaven (天庭) sent two giants to carry the mountains away. In the end, the way was clear. This story teaches us that with a strong will and hard work, no difficulty is too great to overcome.
