B
About 500 people live in Oymyakon and it is common for this village to go over 200 days with temperatures below 0°C. Oymyakon is in Russia and is known as the coldest human settlement (定居点) on earth.
The village’s lowest temperature was recorded at the Oymyakon weather station and reached −71.2°C in 1924. It is almost 20 degrees warmer than the coldest temperature ever recorded on earth at ground level, which was −89.2°C at the Vostok Station in Antarctica in July, 1983.
The average temperature in Oymyakon is around −50°C in the winter months and it has never recorded a temperature above 0°C between October 25 and March 17. This region is extremely cold because the Arctic air is always sitting over top of it. Warm ocean currents (水流) or daylight heating don’t influence the region.
The village is closer to the Arctic Circle than it is to the nearest city. Schools will be open if the temperature stays above −52°C. It is common for temperatures to drop below freezing in late September and stay below freezing until mid-April. Although there are long cold winters, Oymyakon experiences mild and sometimes hot summers. July is the village’s warmest month, with an average temperature of 18.7°C and a record high of 34.6°C.
