Earth is called the “Blue Planet” because 71% of its surface is covered by oceans. There are five oceans: the Antarctic Ocean (Southern Ocean), the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. The Pacific Ocean is the largest — it is even bigger than all the land on Earth combined. The Atlantic Ocean is smaller than the Pacific but larger than the Indian Ocean. The Antarctic Ocean is slightly bigger than the Arctic Ocean, which is the smallest and often frozen because of cold temperatures. Sadly, scientists warn that much of the Arctic ice may melt away because of global warming.
Why are oceans so important? They play a key role in our life. Oceans hold 97% of Earth’s water and provide rainwater through the water cycle. Over half the oxygen we breathe comes from ocean plants. They also give us food, energy (like oil and gas from the seabed), and even clean electricity from waves and tides. In short, without oceans, life on Earth would not exist.
1. Which ocean is larger than the Indian Ocean but smaller than the Pacific Ocean?
A. The Antarctic Ocean.
B. The Atlantic Ocean.
C. The Arctic Ocean.
D. The Indian Ocean.
2. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce different oceans and compare their sizes.
B. To discuss the effects of global warming on the Arctic Ocean.
C. To explain why Earth is blue and the importance of oceans.
D. To describe how humans use ocean resources for energy.

A. 南冰洋。
B. 大西洋。
C. 北冰洋。
D. 印度洋。
