“Kuafu Chasing the Sun” is one of the earliest famous fairy tales in China. It talks about the legendary story of Kuafu who wanted to catch up with the sun.
In ancient times, there lived a group of strong giants deep in the forest in the north and Kuafu was their leader. At that time, the world was desolate and uncultured. There were dangerous animals in the forest. Kuafu kept catching the dangerous animals and sometimes he hung the snakes he had caught on ears for decoration, or caught them in hands waving proudly.
One year, the weather was very hot. The plants were dying and the rivers were dry. People lived a terrible life because of the hot weather. To save his people, Kuafu decided to catch the sun and control it.
Kuafu ran after the sun like the wind on the ground and the sun moved quickly in the sky. After nine days and nights, he finally caught up with the sun. However, the sun was so hot that he felt thirsty and tired, so he drank the water in the Yellow River and the Wei River. But the water from these two rivers was not enough. Then he decided to go to the Great Lake to drink more. However, before he got there, he died on the way.
Before he died, Kuafu threw his walking stick away. It fell onto the land and quickly became a large peach forest. The forest grew well all year round, and it provided peaches for the hard-working people when they were thirsty.
The fairy tale shows the strong wish of the ancient Chinese people to overcome drought. Although Kuafu died, his spirit keeps inspiring Chinese people.
