Arthur takes some very good bread into the classroom. His classmate Carl comes over to smell the bread. But Arthur is not happy with this. “You must give me ten one-cent coins for smelling my bread,” says Arthur.
Carl laughs. He doesn’t give Arthur anything. But he tells their classmates about it. Everyone laughs at Arthur.
This makes Arthur angry. He goes to their teacher Mr Brown for
help.“Carl, please bring ten coins to class tomorrow,” says Mr Brown. Arthur is happy to hear that.
The next day, Carl brings the coins. “Shake them in your hands,” Mr Brown says to Carl. Carl does it.
Then Mr Brown asks Arthur, “Do you hear the sound of the coins?” Arthur says, “Yes.” “OK. He smells your bread for free. And you hear the sound of his coins for free,” says Mr Brown. “So now you and Carl don’t need to give each other anything.”
