He takes the wheelbarrow (独轮车) to a pile of rocks, fills it up, and brings it back again to where he was working. He tips the rocks out and begins to hit them with his hammer (锤子). It is hard work.

Hannay: Good morning!
Specky: What's good about it?
Hannay: One of those days, is it?
Specky: Yeah. You would complain too, if you had my job.
Hannay: Hard work, is it?
Specky: I'm not afraid of hard work. It's staying in one place that I don't like. I used to be a shepherd (牧羊人), you know. That was better because I could walk all over the hills and go where I was pleased. Now I'm stuck here! It's not fun!

[A submarine (潜水艇) is on the sea. A man is standing on the deck (甲板). It is Ned Land. He holds onto a rail with one hand and shades his eyes with the other as he looks into the distance. He shakes his head slowly and sadly. Then he sighs (叹气) and shakes his head again. He is very unhappy.]
[A few moments later, another man comes onto the deck. It is Dr Arronnax.]
Dr Arronnax: Ah, Ned. I thought I would find you here.
[Ned Land looks around at Dr Arronnax but doesn't speak.]
Dr Arronnax: The weather is getting worse.
Ned Land: Yes.
[He turns back to look into the distance. Dr Arronnax goes to stand beside him.]
Dr Arronnax: It's a shame. I'm certain that we can see the coast of America in the distance. It would be a perfect place to escape if the weather were better. It looks like a storm coming. The dinghy (小艇) would never get to the land.
Ned Land: [Angrily] Yes, yes, I know that, Dr Arronnax! I think you are happy!
Dr Arronnax: We just have to wait for a better chance.
Ned Land: That's what you always say. [He turns to face Dr Arronnax.] You said that you would talk to Captain Nemo. You were going to ask him if he would ever let us get off the Nautilus. Have you done it?
Dr Arronnax: There has been no chance. I haven't seen him for days.
Ned Land: Why are you waiting? You can go to his room and knock on the door and ask him, can't you? Soon we will be looking at Canada, my motherland! I can't bear (忍受) it! I must get off the Nautilus! I will throw myself into the sea!
Dr Arronnax: All right. I will ask him the next time I see him.
Ned Land: Shall I go and see him myself?
Dr Arronnax: No, no. I will go and see him. Tomorrow.
Ned Land: Today!
