There was a very special teacher who made a far−reaching(深远的)
difference in my life.
Fall,1959,the first day of the first class was about to begin.“Who is Mrs.Smith,my10th grade English teacher?"I asked a senior.He just smiled and said something about my being in trouble.Soon,I understood what he meant.Mrs.Smith had an activity that she repeated again and again.We would have a reading task for homework.The next day,when we came to class,there would be two or three topics on the blackboard related to the homework reading.We were asked to write an in−class article about one of the topics.The following day,she would return the corrected and graded articles and each person would be called in turn to stand in front of the class and to read out his/her article.The class were required to criticize(评论)that article,or the grade of everyone in class would be reduced.
The first time that I experienced her read−write−criticize methoD,I had not bothered to do the homework and had written something without knowing what it meant.Imagine the embarrassment(尴尬)I suffered:standing before my classmates,making a fool of myself.No one laughed at me;no one would be brave enough,or foolish enough,to do that in Mrs.Smith's class..
Mrs.Smith kept all of our written work in files(存档);it was easy to see the progress in writing that we had made.What Mrs.Smith forced me to do was to see myself as others see me.And having done that,I could improve myself.And I did.Thank you,Mrs.Smith.
