A Time to Talk
By Robert Frost
When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look ▲
On all the hills I haven’t hoed (耕种),
And shout from where I am, “What is it?”
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I stick my hoe in the ground,
Blade (锄头) - end up and five feet tall,
And walk slowly: I go up to the stone wall.
For a friendly visit.

You might have watched people upload (上传) their brains to the cloud in science fiction movies. Elon Musk, the CEO of companies Tesla and SpaceX, recently said that he had already done it. ①
This caused a lot of discussion on Chinese social media (媒体). People wondered if Musk was serious, and others discussed the future development of this technology. How would mind uploading work? Michael S. A. Graziano, a professor at Princeton University, US, said we would need two types of technology: an artificial (人造的) brain and a scan (扫描) of a person’s brain. The scan would need to work out how the cells (细胞) of the brain are connected. This way, your brain, with its memories, could be stored (存储) and kept “alive”. ②
What could we use mind uploading for? You could talk with a loved one who has already passed away. You could see them and talk to their uploaded mind through a screen. ③It would feel just like you’re having a video call with someone who lives in another place.
Although it is a very new technology, people have been talking about the idea of a computer “brain” for many years. US writer Frank Herbert created Cymeks in his 1965 hit book, *Dune* (《沙丘》). The Cymek’s human brain was kept “alive” in a container (容器) with a special fluid (液体). This way, the brain could live for thousands of years and control the robotic body it lives in. ④A more recent example is the 2020 US TV series called *Upload* (《上载新生》). It is set in 2033, a time when humans can “upload” themselves into a virtual (虚拟的) world before they die.
