An idea was born when Liu found that a restaurant would give people who cleared their plates a card and would offer small gifts after a certain number of cards were collected. Then he started a team to work on a mini - programme called “Clear Plate”. The programme works on AI. Liu and his team spent half a year collecting over 100 000 photos of empty (空的) plates in restaurants across the country to teach AI what empty plates look like. Users open the mini - programme on their phone after finishing the meal and take a photo of their empty plates. Then they get credit points (信用积分) after the programme checks the photo. They can use their credit points to buy gifts, such as books, toys and even phones, or they can buy charity meals and donate them to children in need.
Now, “Clear Plate” is very popular among young people and has nearly 1 million users. “It was very difficult in the beginning, but now we’ve received much love and support,” says Liu. “We hope our programme can start a new trend (趋势) among the young people, encouraging (鼓励) them to say no to food waste.”
