The Forbidden City is a world-famous tourist attraction. From its thousands of rooms to its many different beautiful collections, there's no wonder it's one of China's most popular places for tourists. Since it was built during the Ming Dynasty, it's said that the Forbidden City survived more than 200 earthquakes.
Recently, a UK television programme explored its incredible durability. A group of Chinese engineers were shown building a 1 : 5 scale model of one of the Forbidden City's palaces and put it through a simulation (模拟) of a 9.5-magnitude earthquake. Surprisingly, the model only shook gently and didn't fall apart at all.
The key to its strength lies in "dougong", a traditional Chinese building technique. There are some special brackets to connect wooden structures without nails or glue, working like car shock absorbers (减震器) to absorb earthquake energy. This clever design reflects ancient Chinese people's advanced knowledge of mathematics, architecture and materials science.
Today, the Forbidden City remains a precious cultural heritage, and its amazing earthquake-resistant ability makes it even more worthy of admiration.
