Now climbing Mount Qomolangma is not as difficult as 50 years ago. On May 1,1963, Jim Whittaker became the first American to reach the top of the world, climbing the Southeast Ridge (山脊). Only Nawang Gombu, a local villager climbed with him.
Three weeks after that climbing, Americans Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld climbed the West Ridge. On the same day, Barry Bishop and Lute Jerstad made the second American climbing of the Southeast Ridge.
Unlike in 1963, when only six people reached the top, in the spring of 2012 more than 500 reached the top. When I arrived at the top on May 25, it was so crowded that I couldn't find a place to stand. If so many climbers had been caught in a storm, most of them would have died.
Climbing Mount Qomolangma has always been difficult, but now that almost 4,000 people have reached its top, some more than once. The action means less than it did half a century ago. Today, many of the climbers on Mount Qomolangma worked for groups of new climbers. They lead the way for new visitors and help them in many other ways.
The top of Mount Qomolangma is not only crowded but also seriously polluted. If you talk to the people who know it best, they will tell you it is time to do something to protect Mount Qomolangma.
