二、短篇阅读
On May 29, 1953, mountaineers Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay from Nepal made history by becoming the first people to reach the top of Qomolangma, the world's highest mountain. Their great success showed that humans could achieve what once seemed impossible. So how did they do it?
In an interview, Hillary said that to climb such a high mountain, skill and experience are not enough — you also need to have great interest and love for climbing. He said the best climbers always keep that love alive.
And then, there was the team. Teamwork also played the most important role in their success. A large team of over 400 people helped them during the expedition (探险). Some team members carried food, tents to different camps on the mountain. Today, climbers have better transport and technology, but in 1953, everything had to be carried by people. Hillary clearly remembered, "It was a team effort. The two of us who stood on the summit completely depended on everyone's hard work."
Even though Hillary had a good team and all he needed, he wasn't sure if they would reach the top. Because of the height, conditions can change dangerously fast, with bad weather like strong winds or sudden snowstorms... "On a mountain like this... you can never be completely confident," he said.
The historic achievement of Hillary and Tenzing continues to inspire people around the world. It teaches us that with strong passion, good teamwork, and great courage, we can overcome great challenges. Since then, they have inspired many others to climb Qomolangma.
