Ryrkaypiy, a village with about 700 people, is located in the north - east of Russia. Standing on the coast of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋), it has to brave both the Arctic’s cold weather and wild animals like polar bears. Most of the area’s polar bears live a few miles away from Ryrkaypiy.
Only a few bears come near to the village now and then.
But last winter, over 50 polar bears went to Ryrkaypiy in search of food. The villagers were told to stay indoors to avoid danger. Now polar bears come to the village more often and in larger numbers than ever.
Although polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their life on the sea ice. The ice gives them a place where they can have a rest and catch fish. But as the temperature rises because of global (全球的) warming, the bears have started to find their home disappearing.
Polar bears normally go onto dry land in summer, and return to the ice when the ocean freezes (冰冻) again in autumn. But over the past few years, the ocean has frozen later and later, and the ice area has become smaller and smaller. Unable to live on the ice, hungry polar bears have to look for food on land, including villages like Ryrkaypiy.
In some countries, polar bears are considered as endangered animals. If the earth becomes so warm that there is no longer enough ice for the bears to live on, there will probably be no polar bears.
Actions must be taken to protect both polar bears and humans.

Emoji (表情包) history was made on Sept. 19, 1982, when professor Scott Fahlman at Carnegie Mellon University, the US, posted “:-)” on the school’s online bulletin board (电子布告栏). Guinness World Records called this smiley (笑着的) face “the first digital emoticon (数字表情符号)”.
In the 40 years since, emoticons, and later emojis, have become central to our conversations online. Now there are 3 600 emojis available for us to show our feelings, according to CNN.
“They offer things that words aren’t saying. They say that when you say ‘okay’, what kind of okay is that,” Jennifer Daniel, head of the Emoji Subcommittee for the Unicode Consortium, an organization in charge of choosing official emojis, told CNN. She said emojis are like our “body language” online. A study even found that the use of emojis helps us get the same happiness from talking online as we do in person.
Just as language develops, so do emojis. The Unicode Consortium brings out new emojis every year. In 2015, it released (发布) different skin tones (肤色). In 2016, different jobs were added. In 2019, emojis of disabled people were added.
What is the future of emojis? Will emojis develop to become an international language? Or will emojis go the way of the emoticon and disappear after the next big thing comes along? It is hard to predict — even technology and language experts are divided on the topic. What do you think?
Top 10 emojis that make you look “old”
British research institute Perspectus Global did a survey of 2 000 people on emojis. It found that most people between the ages of 16 and 29 believe that you are “officially old” if you use red heart, clapping hands and other emojis. And nearly 87% of them put “thumbs - up” first.
