Over 400 years ago in China, there was a cool traveler. He spent 30 years traveling across China. He was Xu Xiake.
Xu Xiake was from Jiangsu. When he was a child, his family had many books and he enjoyed reading about the mountains and rivers of China. He wanted to see them with his own eyes when he grew up.
At that time, many kids studied hard because they wanted to work for the government when they were older. But Xu Xiake's father was different and never made him do that. He was also the first to find lots of karst caves (喀斯特溶洞). Most of the time, Xu traveled on foot. He slept and ate in nature. Sometimes he fell into rivers or met dangerous animals. But Xu was brave and enjoyed his trip.
Xu kept a diary while traveling—*The Travel Diaries of Xu Xiake*. The book is still popular today. Being an adventurer can be very exciting. But it is also important to be brave and have skills.
