Chinese oil - paper umbrellas have a long history as a symbol of China’s tradition of cultural craftsmanship(工艺) and beauty. They are not just tools to prevent rain or sunlight, but also works of art with rich cultural meanings and value.
Chinese oil - paper umbrellas were brought overseas to Japan and the ancient Korea during the Tang Dynasty,so they are known in those two nations as “Tang umbrellas”.Today,Chinese oil - paper umbrellas are still used as an accessory(配饰) for female roles in traditional Japanese plays.Over the years,Chinese umbrellas have also spread to other Asian countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.
Oil - paper umbrellas are an important part of traditional Chinese weddings because the umbrella is said to help to prevent bad luck. Also because “oil - paper” (youzhi)
sounds similar to “having children” (youzi),the umbrella is seen as a symbol of having more children.Besides, the round shape of the umbrella makes it a symbol of getting together in Chinese.
It takes quite a lot of time and efforts to make a traditional Chinese oil - paper umbrella by hand.Craftsmen must finish more than 70 steps and use over 100 different tools to create a single handmade oil - paper umbrella.
Even though these traditional umbrellas are made of paper, they are durable(耐用的).And although oil - paper umbrellas are no longer used for rainy days now, they would never disappear from our life.
