Lewis is a wild elephant. He lives in the Samburu National Reserve in Kenya, a country in Africa. Lewis uses his legs to walk and his eyes to look for food. He uses his trunk(象鼻) to catch food.

African elephants are in danger. That means the number of the elephants is very small in some places. To protect them, natural reserves like the Samburu National Reserve are set up. They give the animals a safe place to live.
Protecting huge animals can be hard. Food and space are quite important for elephants. It is difficult to find space that is large enough and enough food for them. Many smaller animals, like deer, share a 64 - square - mile reserve. They need less food than Lewis. And unlike Lewis, they don't walk into unsafe places.
Scientists wanted to find out what made the elephants walk into unsafe places. Maybe then they could keep them safe in Samburu. So they prepared some special collars(颈圈) and then put them around the necks of elephants. In this way, they could find out which way the elephants were taking. Scientists learned that Lewis often left the reserve during the dry season. When there was little rain, he couldn't find enough to eat. He learned to find delicious crops on a farm. This information will help Lewis. Scientists can give him food in the dry seasons.
