As a volunteer teacher, Ding Jun travelled a long way to a small village school in Guangxi. On his way there, he thought about the village, the school and the children there. However, his heart sank when he got there. It wasn’t what he expected. It didn’t look like a school at all! The school had only three rooms, one for Grades 1, 2 and 3, one for Grades 4, 5 and 6, and one for him.
The children welcomed Ding warmly on his first day. They asked him many questions, and he told them stories about himself and his life in Nanjing. The next day, he gave them a test to find out their level. To his surprise, the test was easy, but over half of the students failed it. They all wanted to learn new things. He knew they needed him.
Ding was busy preparing lessons and reading test papers every night. He enjoyed teaching these lovely and hard-working children, and he could see that they were making progress with his help. Now he understands their lives better, and they are good friends.
Ding has worked there for about one year. He says the experience is useful to him. He loves the small village and the children. He would like to continue working there.
