(B)
The Great Wall of China, the largest man-made project in the world, is a series of ancient defensive (防御的) walls built in northern China. Although named the “wall”, it is a complete safety system including not only tall and solid walls, but also lots of signal towers, barriers (屏障), army camps, army bases, and strong castles along the walls, together forming an unbreakable line, for thousands of years, to protect the lands of ancient Chinese states against their enemies from the north. This long wall, just like a huge dragon, runs across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, reaching about 21,196 kilometres (13,170 miles) from west to east of China.
Renowned as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987 and one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World, the Great Wall of China is not just “old” and “changeless”. Early in the 7th century BCE, several ancient states built their own walls to mark their places, which were later connected by Qin Shi Huang (259-210 BCE), the First Emperor of China, and known as the “10,000-li Long Wall”. In the following 2,000 years, many dynasties kept making the Great Wall stronger and longer, for not only self-protection but also border trade management, taxes collection on goods crossing the border, and immigration (移民) control.
