Engkey, a white, egg - shaped robot developed by the Korean scientists, began teaching English to the students in a South Korean city. The 29 robots, about one metre high with a TV display panel (盘) for a face, wheeled around the classroom while speaking to the students, reading books to them and dancing to music. The robots are controlled by the English teachers in the Philippines. They can see and hear the students through a remote control system. The well - educated, experienced Filipino teachers are far cheaper than the teachers anywhere else, including South Korea. “The kids seemed to love it because the robot looks nice, cute and interesting. Having such a robot in the classroom makes the students more active in taking part, especially shy ones who are afraid of speaking out to human teachers,” said Kim, an education officer. Besides reading books, the robot can sing songs and play games with the students. Kim said some of the robots may be sent to rural areas of South Korea. She said the robots are still being tested. But the government might consider using them full time if scientists make them easier to operate (操作) and more affordable.

Can dogs and cats live in peace in the same home? People who are thinking about keeping a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent study has found a new successful method. According to the study, if the cat is raised before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than six months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly possible that the two pets will get along peacefully.
However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression (攻击) and fighting were noticed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals are just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away, it means aggression, while a dog doing the same means kindness.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers found some surprising behaviour—they are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”.
What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence (智力). They can learn to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than what was thought before. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases have fun playing together.
The significance (意义) of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets—it may apply to people who don’t get along, including neighbours, workmates, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
