For many foreigners, Chinatown is their first introduction to China. Chinatown in Singapore is called “niu che shui”, meaning “bullock cart water”. The name dates back to the 19th century, when Chinese people first came to Singapore. At that time they used bullock carts(牛车)to deliver water to the Chinatown area. Of course, Chinatown is more modern today, but still has a traditional style as well.
In a country where about 75 per cent of the population is Chinese, one might wonder why there is a need for Chinatown. Does Singapore really need such a place?
The ancestors(祖先)of most Singaporeans came from Malaysia, China, or India. They have since created a kind of culture that combines(结合)all three cultures. But the charm of Chinatown lies in the fact that it remains authentic(地道的)Chinese culture, despite culture changes over time.
Food is so important in Chinatown that it even has a street called Chinatown Food Street. There are foods from all across China there. One can try anything from beef noodles to seafood porridge.
The purpose of Chinatown differs in every city. In Singapore, it reminds every Singaporean of their past and represents a part of history for the country’s visitors. Chinatown in Singapore is not only for the Chinese, but also a place for all races to unite. This is one of the values on which the nation was built.
