About the horse
The horse has played an important role throughout human history all over the world. It was used for thousands of years as a way of transport, a weapon in the war and a plougher(耕地者) of fields, but it is more than a vehicle. It has more characters than a car, a tank and a tractor.
In the Middle Ages in Western societies, the horse was a symbol of upper class. But now, people are less likely to see or ride horses. People living in cities, in particular, hardly ever experience horses except through movies, paintings or books. However, horse racing and betting(下赌注) money on horse races are still popular.
In China, the Year of the Horse comes after the Snake. Since the horse is a symbol of strength, honesty, persistence(毅力) and cleverness, people born in the Year of the Horse are said to share such good qualities.
The importance of the horse in the past appears in idioms that are still used in English today. For example, people still say “to hold your horses” to mean “to slow down”. If someone seems too proud, people might tell him or her “to get off his or her high horse”. Since horses are strong and energetic, there are expressions such as “as strong as a horse”, “workhorse” and “horsing around”.
Besides its physical strengths, the horse also has a powerful brain and an excellent memory. Maybe that’s why the Chinese idiom says, “An old horse never gets lost.”
