Mr. Smith often receives letters from students who are unhappy about the rules at school. One day, he receives a letter from Gary, who is feeling bad about the number of rules he has to follow. Gary writes, “I have to clean my room every day, and I can’t let my desk get untidy. At school, I can’t wear my own clothes. I can’t wear my favourite hat either. After school, I can watch TV, but only after I finish my homework, walk the dog, and do lots of other things! I can’t even relax at weekends, because I have to practise the violin every day! I never have fun. What can I do?”
Mr. Smith writes back to Gary, “I know it can be difficult to follow many rules. But rules can be good for us. They help us become better. You can use your free time to do things you enjoy, like playing sport or reading books. Remember, rules are there to help you become a better person.”
