A video became popular online. It showed a group of visitors travelling in the desert in Turpan, Xinjiang. Suddenly, they found their hair standing straight up. This scared everyone. "Our hair returned to normal after we drove about 3 kilometres away," one visitor said. Many people online thought this was a sign of a coming storm. They advised the group to run away quickly.
However, an expert, Feng Minxue, said running is not the best idea. He explained that if a person's hair is just a little dry with static electricity (静电), there is still time to leave. But if the hair has already stood straight up, like in the video, running could be dangerous. If people cannot leave the area in time, they should crouch down (蹲下) at once, cover their head with their hands, and avoid touching the ground with hands.
Wu Xueke, a university teacher, said that clouds with electricity above the visitors' heads caused this situation. In serious cases, a person might be hit by lightning. So, if people experience this outdoors, they should stay calm and take the correct action.
