B
Yesterday evening, I was working in the garden. It was a gentle, pleasant night, and I was making the most of the nice weather when I heard a neighbour's voice from the path leading out of the garden.
"That's no place to sleep!" he called out.
I looked over and saw a man lying on his back on the path, eyes closed. I recognized him—I'd watched him stumbling蹒跚而行 along that path like a drunkard酗酒者 several times before.
I stopped working and went over."Do you need some help?" I asked.
He opened his eyes and replied,"Probably." He then told me that arthritis关节炎 made it hard for him to walk most of the time. When he asked if I could help him get home—his house was only a few hundred metres away—I agreed right away.
I tried to let him walk on his own while I guided him, but we weren't getting anywhere. Carrying him would have been easier, but I knew that would be a real insult侮辱 to him. So I took his left hand with mine and grabbed his belt with my right, and we slowly made our way forward.
On the forty-five-minute walk to his house, he told me all about himself—his name, what he used to do for work, the holidays he'd been on, how wonderful his granddaughter was, and what his wife's name was. He even joked about how much trouble he'd be in when he got home!
Thank goodness, his wife wasn't there when we arrived.
If we wait until we "feel like it" to help others, many people will be left without the support they need—and we'll end up being the kind of people who just walk on by. Let's not let that happen.
