新素材·野生动物专用天桥(原创)Bridge for wild animals opens in Colorado
One of the largest bridge structures for wildlife in North America, measuring 209 feet by 200 feet, has been finished. The I-25 Greenland Wildlife Overpass near Larkspur, Colorado, was built to allow animals to safely cross the wide busy road interstate(州际公路).
More than 100,000 cars can travel each day on the I-25, which already has five animal crossings over it. The location of the new bridge fills a large gap in the interstate that didn't have one. Animals living in the area now can go to about 39,000 acres of living places, near water, on both sides of the road. This helps them look for food and find their partners more easily.
The overpass was designed specifically for elk and pronghorn. Both kinds of animals prefer big, open areas where they can see far, said Chuck Attardo, an environmental manager with the Colorado Department of Transportation. “We made sure that this overpass was large to attract them,” Attardo said, adding that he expects other animals, such as mountain lions, moose, bears, and deer, to also use the overpass. Cameras have been set up on the crossing to take pictures of wildlife crossing over it. People will watch the pictures to learn more about animals' living habits.
After the overpass was built, workers covered it in dirt and planted native grasses and other vegetation. Kara Van Hoose, an official with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, told Colorado Public Radio she hopes the plantings will encourage animals to use the overpass. She also believes the bridge will help animals stay away from danger.
Colorado's leader also thinks the bridge can cut down accidents between cars and animals by 90%. “The I-25 Greenland Wildlife Overpass is a momentous feat in our continued work to expand safe transportation options for both humans and wildlife,” said Jared Polis, governor of Colorado.
