Plants bring us fruit and vegetables. And they also give us the oxygen we need. But do you know enough about plants? The documentary The Green Planet shows the secret lives of plants that we have never seen before. Though they can't walk or talk, they act like animals in many ways.

Fighting
Plants fight against each other to live. In tropical forests, they fight for sunlight. The forest floor is like a battlefield. Only 2 per cent of the sunlight gets to it. A Monstera spreads its big leaves to reach sunlight. At the same time, a vine catches it to get a ride. But a balsa tree beats both of them because it grows faster.
Helping each other
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, the roots of Euphrates poplars are connected. If a tree finds water, it'll share it with others through the roots. Studies also show plants use things in the soil as a way to "talk" to each other. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease, it will tell nearby plants about it.
Defending
Each kind of plant has its own ways to protect itself. Some trees make poisonous(有毒的) sap. Some flowers give off a bad smell. The documentary shows us a corpse flower(尸花). It grows a metre wide. Looking closely, you will find it has "teeth". Its petals are the colour of blood. More dangerously, it gives off a pungent(气味强烈的) smell to keep animals away.
