Xu Jian is a visually impaired（视力受损的）woman in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. For the past seven years, Xu's guide dog Daimeng has been at her side at work and for everyday life. Guide dogs mean a lot to visually impaired people.
Xu got the dog from the China Guide Dog Training Centre in Dalian, Liaoning Province. It's the first guide dog training centre in China. Wang Jingyu, a teacher at Dalian Medical University, set it up in 2006. Over the years, the guide dog centre has trained about 400 guide dogs, with more than 350 now working in 27 cities across China.
According to Wang Xin, a trainer who has been working at the centre since 2010, 90% of the centre's guide dogs are Labradors, which are kind and smart. Once trainers find good guide dog puppies（小狗）, they need to take personality（性格）tests. A good guide dog should not be too curious（好奇的）, excitable, or shy as these personalities could make problems during work, according to Wang.
One volunteer named Sun, has kept four puppies since 2019. “Keeping guide dogs is quite different from keeping pet dogs,” said Sun. She strictly follows the the
centre's guidelines（指导方针）for their care, like the kind and the number of feeding, and teaching the dogs when to say no to food. She also guides them along the blind way, mangdao. It helps visually impaired people know they are safe when walking.
However, even if the dogs successfully pass all tests, they could still be turned down if they don't enjoy the work of a guide dog, Wang said.
Usually, guide dogs work for six to ten years. Those who are turned down or are too old are usually taken in as pets by their trainers or volunteers.
