Chopsticks, called "kuaizi" in Chinese, are a great ancient invention from China with a history of over 3,000 years. At first, they were never used as eating tools for meals.
In ancient times, people cooked food over fire. Boiling soup and hot dishes burned their fingers easily. To solve this
problem, they picked thin branches or bamboo twigs to take food out of hot pots. Those simple sticks became the earliest chopsticks, only working as cooking tools back then.
Later, during the Shang Dynasty, people made chopsticks out of bronze. Bronze chopsticks were found at Yin Ruins in Henan, the oldest real chopsticks we can see today. It was not until the Han Dynasty that ordinary people started using chopsticks
to eat every day. At that time, people cut food into small pieces to save firewood. Small food pieces were hard to pick up with spoons, so chopsticks became more popular at dinner tables.
As time went by, bamboo and wooden chopsticks took the place of bronze ones, for they were cheap and light. This small invention slowly spread to Japan, Korea and other Asian countries. Even now, billions of people use chopsticks every day. It is not only a useful tool, but also a precious symbol of traditional Chinese culture.
