How Are Typhoons Named?
Most typhoons form(形成)between June and November.They all have special and
interesting names,such as Wu kong(Monkey King),Shan shan(a girl's name)and
Mang k hut(山 i 竹).Do you know how typhoons get their names?
At first,most major typhoons were named by a system of latitude-longitude numbers
(经纬度数).It helped scientists track these storms.However,this kind of names were too
difficult for common people to remember..
Now,the World Meteorological Organization(世界气象组织)has a list of names for
typhoons.There are 140 names on the list.When a typhoon comes,it is named according to
the order of names on the list.These names are submitted(提交)by 14 countries and
regions along the northwestern Pacific Ocean coast(西北太平洋沿岸),including China,
Japan and Thailand.If a typhoon causes huge damage(造成巨大的破坏),its name wil 11 be
retired from the list,and a new name will he added.
