As the afternoon sets in, the sun begins to warm the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(青藏高原), making it the peak time for Tibetan antelopes to search for food. After a night without eating, these creatures appear near Zonag Lake in the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve.
A little larger animal stands out on the grass. Unlike the others, which have lowered their heads to eat, this “antelope” holds its head high, moving carefully toward the herd.
It is a robotic antelope, which, from a distance, looks just like the real antelopes nearby, sharing the same fur color and body shape. But up close, there is a hidden camera beneath its eyes. It has strong legs and can walk on hills.
At first, the real antelopes seem curious about the newcomer, pausing to look at the mechanical(机械的) stranger. However, the robot does not scare them away. Soon, the real antelopes let it join their group. The robotic antelope can take videos when these real antelopes eat grass.
In the past, the real antelopes ran away as soon as they saw someone from a distance—even 500 to 800 meters away. They are afraid of cameras and lots of noise. Now, robots can watch them quietly.
Scientists got the idea of making the robotic antelope from human-like robots on TV in February this year. They worked with a company to make this robotic antelope. Now they want the robotic antelope to watch the birth of baby antelopes. The robotic antelope will keep helping scientists learn about these special animals.
