You may have seen them coming quickly toward you or passing you quickly. They're moving quickly, swinging what looks like a ski pole in each hand. But you aren't on a ski hill, and there's no snow around. These people aren't skiing. They're enjoying a kind of exercise called Nordic walking(北欧式健走).

This activity takes its name from Nordic, or cross-country skiing. Nordic skiers don't just ski down hills. Sometimes they have to go up hills! They use their poles to help push themselves along. Nordic skiers were the first to use poles while walking. It was a way to train for their sport when there was no snow. Then other people, learning of the health advantages of the exercise, began to do it, too.
In the early days of Nordic walking, all walkers—skiers and non-skiers alike—used ski poles. In 1988, an American company began making and selling poles especially for walking. Nordic walking poles are shorter than ski poles. That's because they usually aren't used in snow. And they don't stick very deeply into the ground. Some of them come with different ends, for use on different surfaces. Some of them are designed to telescope, making them easy to pack and carry on trips.
Although regular walking is healthy, studies have shown that Nordic walking is even healthier. With each step, Nordic walkers push themselves forward with one of their poles. This builds strength in the muscles(肌肉) of the arms and chest. It makes the heart and lungs work harder, which makes them stronger. For young and old, Nordic walking is a great way to exercise the whole body outdoors. And there's none of the danger of falling on skis.

答案
1. A kind of exercise. 由第一段中“They're enjoying a kind of exercise called Nordic walking.”可知,这是一种锻炼方式。
2. Nordic skiers. 由第二段中“Nordic skiers were the first to use poles while walking. It was a way to train for their sport when there was no snow.”可知,北欧滑雪者在没有雪的情况下最先使用滑雪杆训练。
3. Because they usually aren't used in snow. 由第三段中“Nordic walking poles are shorter than ski poles. That's because they usually aren't used in snow.”可知,北欧式步行杆短些是因为不需要在雪中使用。
4. Nordic walking is good for health. 通读最后一段,且由 studies have shown that Nordic walking is even healthier 可知,最后一段主要介绍北欧式步行有益健康。
