Hello everyone! I'm Robby. I'm in a popular hotel in Italy. I can speak Italian, English, and German. I can answer questions from the
guests from all over the world who want to know how to find a good restaurant. I work long days, but I don't get paid.
I look like a real person. Guess what I am.
Robby works the summer season at the hotel. He's the first one to hold such a position. He helps the human front desk workers so that they don't have to answer as many questions. "He's like a real person. He's better than any other robot I have ever seen. He talked, and he shook my hand," said Mihail Slanina, a guest from Moldova.
Robby was developed by Japan's Softbank Robotics. For his hotel job, Robby was programmed to answer a list of questions about things at the hotel. The use of service robots is growing in the tourist industry. But most of the robots are used just to impress customers.
Richard Windsor is a technology expert in England. He says that the use of robots for most things doesn't make sense. He says the robots are still "way too stupid". They can't do enough yet. Giorgio Metta, another technology expert in Italy, said the real advance will be when the service robots can pick up and move objects.
For now, these robots are being used in stores, hotels, and other businesses to answer simple questions and count people. But getting people to accept the robots is important. People in the U. S. and Japan seem to like them more than people in Europe.
