What's the best place to visit in 2023? Maybe you should pack for South Asia. Lonely Planet has picked Sri Lanka as the best country to visit this year.
Ever since a 30-year civil war (内战) ended in 2009, travel in Sri Lanka has become much easier. This is the main reason why the small island country topped this year's list, according to Matt Philips, editor at Lonely Planet.
"During the civil war, there were large lands in the north that were completely off limits," he said. "But now there are new roads and rail links, and new internal flights (国内航班)."
One thing you can't miss in Sri Lanka is tea. Sri Lanka is known for producing some of the world's finest teas. Tea tours are popular there. You can visit some of the country's oldest tea factories and enjoy the tea-making process.
Side by side with the tea fields, you may see Buddhist temples (佛寺) that were built thousands of years ago.
Actually, few places have as many UNESCO World Heritage Sites (eight) packed into such a small area. Sri Lanka is home to some of world's oldest cities. Anuradhapura (阿努拉德普拉) and Sigiriya (锡吉里亚) both have amazing ancient ruins (遗迹). Legendary temples lie in caves or on mountain tops. There are also colonial fortresses (殖民地时期的要塞), including Galle and Trincomalee.
Sri Lanka's travel products have become more diverse (多样的) in recent years, according to Philips. In addition to beach holidays, you can also choose to go on a yoga trip or visit national parks to see elephants, leopards and water buffaloes (水牛).
"It's also great for foodies—Sri Lanka has everything," Philips added.
