My father said, “Go over and see, Clarisse! I'd like to have you see with your own eyes. ”
My mother did so. When she returned, she said madly, “I believe that it is him. But why don't you ask the captain?” I followed my father as he went to meet the captain, for I felt strangely moved. My father asked the captain, “Do you know anything about the old shell opener there?”
The captain soon answered, “He is a French tramp whom I found last year in America. It seems that he has some relatives in Havre, but that he doesn't wish to return to them because he owes them money. His name is Jules. It seems that he was once rich over there, but you can see what's left of him now.”
My father thanked the captain before returning to my mother. He seemed completely mad, saying, “It's him! It's him!”
Suddenly becoming angry, my mother shouted, “I always thought that thief would never do anything, and that he would one day drop down upon us again!” Then she said quickly, “Let's go down to the other end of the boat to make sure that man doesn't come near us! That would be very unpleasant!”
They gave me five francs and walked away. I went to tell my sisters to meet our parents. Then, I asked the shell opener, “How much do we owe you, sir?”
He answered, “Two francs fifty.”
I held out my five francs and he returned the change. I looked at his face, an unhappy old face. I said to myself, “That is my uncle, the brother of my father!”
I gave him a ten-cent tip. He thanked me, “God bless you, my young sir!”
When I returned the two francs to my father, my mother asked me in surprise, “Was there three francs' worth? That is impossible.”
“I gave him ten cents as a tip,” I answered.
I knew my mother was angry with me, but she stopped herself.
As we were just about to go ashore, I really wanted to see my uncle Jules once again. But he had disappeared.
