On July 11, 2025, something exciting happened in Paris. The Xixia Imperial Tombs in China were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Committee(委员会) commended the efforts made by the Chinese government in the protection and management of the cultural heritage of the Xixia Imperial Tombs. They also praised the achievement, too. Now China has 60 World Heritage Sites!
The Xixia Dynasty was a kingdom founded by the Tangut people(党项人) in the year 1038. It lasted for 189 years. The imperial tombs are at the foot of the Helan Mountains in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. They cover an area of about 50 square kilometers. There are nine big tombs and more than 200 smaller tombs. These tombs are like history books. They help us learn about how the Xixia people lived, what their cities were like, and how they used water.
One interesting thing about the tombs is where they were built. They were built on land shaped(塑造) by mountain floods. The land looks like a big fan. Desert plants grow in the area. The high ground helps keep the tombs safe from water.
People have worked hard to protect these tombs for many years. In 1988, they were added to the third batch(批) of National Key Protected Cultural Relic Units. In 2017, they became part of the National Archaeological Site Park. Scientists also found many old books written in the Tangut language(西夏语) near the tombs. These books are so important because they help us understand more about the culture and daily life of the Xixia people.
Now that the Xixia Imperial Tombs have become a World Heritage Site, more people from all over the world can come to visit and learn about this part of Chinese history. The tombs show how different cultures came together in ancient China. They are very important for people to study and explore.
